Many of these friendly and well-run places are just yards from some of our best-known attractions. There are many camp sites on Hadrian's Wall and during the summer months you'll see brightly coloured tents pitched by walkers in fields along its length.
There are also numerous camping and caravan sites on the Northumberland Coast just a few steps from the sand dunes and within easy reach of highlights like Bamburgh Castle and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.
You'll even find camping and caravan sites in Northumberland in the grounds of old country houses.
And for those who want to truly escape from the modern world, you will find several basic, cheap camp sites in Northumberland National Park and Kielder Water & Forest Park.
