The Official Visitor Site for Northumberland
The wide stretch of gloriously uncrowded coast at Druridge Bay is one of Northumberland's most impressive stretches of beach, backed by beautiful sand dunes and neighbouring Druridge Bay Country Park - the largest in Northumberland, with an abundance of wildlife and open spaces in which to discover the great outdoors. The hamlet of Cresswell lies to the south, a famous spot for bird watching, while Newbiggin-by-the-Sea is an attractive seaside town with strong links to the sea. Cod caught by its small fleet of the traditional Northumbrian fishing cobles still maintained today can be enjoyed at restaurants in the town. The RNLI Lifeboat Station dates from 1851 and the boathouse itself is the oldest in operation in the country, whilst the beautiful medieval church of St. Bartholomew perches on the cliff top nearby.
Inland, Ashington & Bedlington have market days on Tuesday and Thursdays whilst Blyth has a good range of shops. To the south, the picturesque harbour town of Seaton Sluice marks the start of a 7.5 mile wooded river valley walk through the bluebell woods of Holywell Dene. Visit the Watch House Museum, explore the impressive 18th century Seaton Delaval Hall or visit Cramlington, a busy shopping centre ideal for stocking up on food & drink for a picnic in Plessey Woods Country Park or Wansbeck Riverside Park. Also close by is the fantastic new attraction of Woodhorn and Queen Elizabeth II Country Park with its wildlife and sailing and watersports lake.
