The Official Visitor Site for Northumberland
Kielder and Redesdale is Northumberland's forest and lake district - a cycling, walking and fishing haven, home to Kielder Water & Forest Park and the Rede and North Tyne salmon and trout rivers. It's known as 'Wild Redesdale' for good reason; a remote and tranquil landscape with some of the best fishing in the country.
Redesdale is full of captivating towns and villages such as Kielder, Falstone, Greenhaugh, Rochester and Wark. Kielder Village, recognised as England's most remote village, has a Victorian viaduct and luxury log cabin accommodation nearby. The full breathtaking beauty of Redesdale can really be appreciated at Elsdon, standing high in the Northumberland National Park with a spooky hangman's gibbet and haunted 14th century church with pele tower. Byrness is a favourite with walkers and cyclists, with an excellent youth hostel and campsite facilities bordering the National Park.
Violent centres of border feuding for 300 years, the market towns of Bellingham and Otterburn extend a warmer welcome today. Bellingham's parish church of St Cuthbert is home to a beautifully unique stone covered arched roof, built in response to the repetitive burnings of its wooden one by Border Reivers. Bellingham's Heritage Centre tells the story of this lively history. Otterburn is site of the moonlit 1388 Battle of Otterburn as well as home to some of the area's larger hotels, including an 11th century castle founded by William the Conqueror's cousin. The Otterburn Mill woollens shop and cafe is a popular draw, as are the region's challenging golf courses set amongst the stunning countryside.
