Hadrian's Wall Country Towns & Villages

The towns and villages of Hadrian's Wall Country run through a spectacular swathe of countryside, making a great base from which to explore the famous World Heritage Site and providing a reason to visit the area in their own right.

MatfenCorbridge lies in an area of beautiful farmland, well known for excellent restaurants, great pubs, art galleries and interesting and unique shops. Explore the market town of Prudhoe with its Norman Castle, the village of Wylam, birthplace of railway pioneer George Stephenson and the pretty country villages of Mickley, Stocksfield and Riding Mill. Aydon Castle lies nearby, one of the finest and most unaltered examples of a 13th century English manor house, standing in beautiful secluded woodland.

HexhamHexham, recently voted 'Britain's Favourite Market Town' by Country Life magazine, is full of things to do. The beautiful Hexham Abbey towers over the market place, where delicious locally produced food and drink can be found at monthly Farmers' Markets. The Moot Hall and Old Gaol Museum provide fascinating insights into the rich history of the town. Nearby, Slaley Hall Hotel stands elegantly in 1,000 acres of beautiful forest and moorland with a championship golf course, home to The Great North Open.

HaltwhistleFurther west, classic countryside opens out around the villages of Chollerford, Humshaugh and Haydon Bridge. Chollerford on the River North Tyne is a great spot for fishing and nearby Bardon Mill with its acclaimed pottery lies within walking distance of Vindolanda museum and Allen Banks Country Park. Further west lies Haltwhistle, the geographic centre of Britain, home to busy market days and traditional tea rooms and country pubs.
