Northumberland Cafes & Tearooms

Featured cafes in Northumberland

There's nothing like a relaxing cup of tea, a scone or a traditional 'border tart' in a busy cafe or traditional tea room. In Northumberland we've got some fantastic places for that light snack or warming drink, and even a belly busting 'stottie' sandwich for when you've worked up a serious appetite in Northumberland's great outdoors.

For a unique tea experience head to Howick Hall & Gardens, the former home of Earl Grey, the ex-prime minister of Britain for whom the world famous Earl Grey tea was created. The blend of tea leaves was specifically created to compliment the natural water at Howick Hall, meaning you will only experience how Earl Grey tea was originally meant to taste here.

Many Northumberland gardens and stately homes have excellent value tearooms serving tasty locally made snacks, often with great views out over the landscaped grounds.

You will also find many farm shops selling the very best of local produce dotted around Northumberland, and many offer bustling cafes in which to enjoy a light snack while contemplating what locally grown and organic foods you wish to buy.

All of our larger market towns have some great places for coffee and a chat - one of our best known coffee shops is within Alnwick's Barter Books - which is housed in the town's former railway station - where you can relax with a hot drink and a good second hand book.

Our coastal towns and villages also have a fine selection of cafes and tea rooms - just the thing after a bracing walk on one of our stunning beaches.
