Beautiful part of the country

mick_lauren_tomsett, Brisbane Region, Australia
We booked the cottage "High Tipalt" for a week in early October the weather was initially very windy and wet, but it cleared into a beautiful week.we were there with two other couples and their dogs who were very welcome. The open fire in the living room kept the cottage lovely and warm and the views of the open countryside were second to none. If your looking for somewhere in the middle of nowhere this is the place. The nearest big town Hexham in roughly 40 mins away. The drive to the cottage takes you over the wall at Caw Pass and a further 2-3 miles takes you onto an unmade road down to the farm. The cottage has its own washing machine with a laundry room across the yard with a great dryer to get your washing dry. One down side was that of the three bedrooms only one had a shower with the other two having baths and the water pressure was very poor and it took around half an hour to run a bath in the morning. In general the cottage lived up to its hype. For a very rural, out of the way cottage where you are left to your own devices and you have an interest in Roman history this is definitely the place to go. Take advantage of the farm dogs Sadie and Heidi's company, something to eat and their your friends for the stay.

Brilliant stay

ianandlesley56, North East England
Recently back from a 7 day stay at High Tipalt Cottage, a proper country cottage with stone floors, beamed ceilings and full of character features. We agree totally with all the positive comments posted so we won’t repeat them here. Our adult children (and partners) joined us over the weekend so we took advantage not only the numerous games room facilities but also the cottages had access to a discounted Clay Pigeon shooting school which could be arranged in the nearby fields on the farm. I was originally concerned over the noise as it was so peaceful and quiet but assured by other residents the noise was hardly noticeable for the couple of hours it took. The guys who set it up for us were both friendly & patient and a great time was had by all. If you are not frightened to be prise yourself away from your phone, emails and social media, willing to wait until the cattle standing on the road decide to move when they are ready, love dogs (either your own or a “borrowed” farm dog or two), willing to entertain yourself, appreciate walking in the open country side and enjoy cooking your own food then this is a perfect place for you. Really relaxing and highly recommended. Loved it.

Stunning Scotchcoultard

SunderlandLisa, Sunderland
We stayed for a family holiday for one week we got back on Friday. Our family consists of us the parents our five children boys and girls ages from 7 to 23 and our girls partners also joined us along with 2 of our Spaniels. We stayed in Hawthorn on arrival we had a gorgeous chocolate cake waiting for us which we thought is a really special touch but even better we were greeted by the fabulous Sadie , Meg , Heidi and Rob . The cottage is absolutely beautiful and the surroundings are stunning. The pool is wonderful as is the games room they are great additions .Susan and Andrew the owners are just the nicest people so friendly and very helpful. We visited Hadrian Wall and the Museum which we thought was brilliant and beautifully maintained definitely worth a visit . We all had a great time at the cottage and went on some beautiful walks with ALL of the dogs they all got along great i looked forward to opening the door each morning for them to troop in for breakfast with us . The cottage is beautiful and the beds so comfortable it contains everything you need fridge freezer , cooker ,microwave, dishwasher etc . There was nothing better having a glass of red on the patio taking in the view . The kids have all said they would love to return. So we have already been in touch with Susan and have booked up to go back for our wedding Anniversary in Feb but just me the hubby and the dogs shhhh don't tell the kids !!! Highly recommend Scotchcoultard it's a hidden gem .

Family Holiday

We stayed at Scothcoulthard in High Tipalt for 7 nights. Upon arrival we were greeted with a homemade cake and also by the lovely farm dogs, Sadie, Heidi & Meg. The dogs barely left our side all week and made our holiday. They joined us for most of our walks and made themselves at home when we were in the cottage. The cottage was spacious, well equipped and had all the comforts of home - dishwasher, washing machine and on site tumble dryer. After our daily walks through the woods and daily visits to see the pigs, the kids burned off the last of their energy in the on site swimming pool. The reception on my mobile phone was non existent, which I personally loved. We drove into Haltwhistle most days to go to supermarket (around a 15-20 minute drive) through open fields full of sheep and cows. Fantastic views, friendly owners and fabulous farm dogs - we are missing them already! Highly recommended and I am about to go on their website to see when we can book to return.

A proper country retreat

Idesireu2, Mansfield, United Kingdom
we just got back from a week staying at the Hawthorne Cottage, part of the Scotchcoulthard Self Catering Cottages. It was myself and my husband, my sister in law and our friend Mel. We decided to take my sister in law away in honour of her 60th birthday and we thought a week in the country with nothing important to do other than eat, read, sleep and take in the local landscape and history. When we first got to the house after the drive from Nottinghamshire, we followed he directions sent to me by Susan and Andy which were easy to follow and brought us to the very long rocky driveway. There was no one there when we arrived so we noticed that the door to the cottage was unlocked and we were instantly greeted by Sadie the Jack Russell and Meg, Heidi and Finn all Labradors. When we opened the door and started to head in there was someone there, the housekeeper/friend of the family and she said we were fine to go in. When we did we were met with a proper lovely cottage that had all the makings of "you are in the country now". There was a lovely lemon cake waiting for us and we quickly put the kettle on and went to explore the upstairs (as well as a guided tour of the downstairs by 3 of the lovely dogs ). Upstairs are 3 bedrooms all with en-suites, 2 with double beds and one with 2 twin beds. My husband and I took the room all the way to the left which had a stone wall and a very high ceiling with gorgeous beams and all of these rooms had views that were incredible. you could see so far when there was no cloud. We had to walk through the room with the twin beds to get to ours but the walls are so thick that it just doesn't matter and this is no big deal at all. The bed in our room at least was amazing and so incredible comfortable, not only the mattress but the pillows and the duvet just wrapped you perfectly and when you turn the lights off to go to bed, there is not one ounce of light anywhere and the silence is just beautiful. what a great nights sleep we all had. Not only is there no light pollution up there, there is no noise at all, the only thing you hear is the cows and the sheep and the occasional member of your family snoring haha.. The en-suites were lovely although the water pressure is non-existent but that is because the water comes from a tank and is not on the grid. our shower literally had dribbles coming out but my sister in laws was better and actually had water coming out of the shower so we used hers. That being said, all of the bathrooms were super clean and the towels were big and soft and plenty of them!!! The downstairs was really nice and comfortable and homely. We literally spend all evening after dinner and just sat and read and talked and although there is a big modern TV, it only went on when the England Women's semi final was on and that was it. Never missed it, we didn't need it. My only comment with the cozy front room are the toss pillows on one of the couches could be replaced. They were a bit tattered and I think just would need 2 new ones. There is also NO internet while you are there. Every now and again my phone would ping with a message but 99.9% absolutely nothing.. BUT you don't need or miss it when you have those views around you. Just sitting and looking outside with one of the dogs with you was pure perfection. Better than anything I could see on the internet. The landscape is stunning so worthy of all your attention. The kitchen looks like a proper country kitchen with all the modern cooking items you need. We cooked dinner a couple of times and had our breakfast there and it was just like cooking at home. you had everything you needed and is a comfortable place to just sit and chat, which we did with endless cups of tea. This location is a perfect spot for checking out what this part of Northumberland has to offer. You are not far at all from all the Roman Heritage sites such as Vindolanda and Houseteads which are both pretty cool as well as day trips to Newcastle, Durham, Hexam, Alnmouth and Carlisle. All of which we did. There are also plenty of things to see in the area as this part of the world is steeped in history. The landscape around as well is just pure beauty. We all just wanted to go somewhere where we could just chill and enjoy and this did not disappoint at all.# My only complaint of these lovely self catering cottages is the pool. What a bonus and treat to have an indoor pool on your doorstep, literally. Although, it is a good size the pool itself could really use a very good scrub and the lining needs to be fixed. There was some stuff floating, which looked like a huge clump of dog hair and some other stuff but there was no net to fish it out which we would have done. There is a great games room and kitchen area all attached to this pool area and again, what a great bonus this is but it needs some TLC. We only went the once as I wasn't really wanting to go back in. All in all, this place is really fantastic, we even had the RAF practicing overhead one of the mornings. It was loud and thrilling to watch them come over. It was like a private show and we were told that they often do practice. Was quite cool. I already miss Sadie, what a cutie and all of them actually, so sweet and loving and just want some attention and a biscuit and they are happy. they get to wander freely and they will come to your door and wait for you... A definite place to stay if you plan on a trip up this way. Well worth it and I would love to go back.

Scotchcoulthard Holiday Cottages replied: I am pleased you enjoyed staying with us and it was lovely to meet you. I will check the water pressure in the shower in your bathroom as it should be better than a trickle! The pool is just one long problem! We have not long changed the lining but decided a few years ago to use bromine not chlorine in the water as it is not as bad for asthma sufferers. However, we didn't realise that the bromine would react to the iron in our water and turned everything yellow - hence the staining. We have scrubbed many times to no avail. I am sorry about the net it was probably in the room at the back. I'll blame my husband for that! We probably do need to change the lining again at some stage but it can take weeks to fill the pool as you can imagine. However, the winter maintenance priorities this year are to insulate the downstairs of Hawthorn, re-carpet the living room and install a new kitchen. Also install a shower in Hope Sike and finish the kitchen in the games room area. The pool may be year after!
