Blacksmith's Cottage has some of the best views in Northumberland for you to enjoy at your own pace - a total 'get away from it all' holiday. Take a gentle stroll, a longer hike can take you over the hills into Scotland, or a bike ride - a perfect way to absorb this amazing landscape. Step out into a myriad of footpaths and bridleways with sheltered valleys, hidden waterfalls and dramatic hills, rich in wildlife and archaeological finds.

Alternatively, take the car and enjoy rural Northumberland without hardly passing another car or person, taking a break at a tea room suggested in one of the many itineraries offered in the cottage.

Places to Visit -

The market town of Alnwick with its wonderful Castle and Gardens is a 30 minute drive, and just beyond are all of the beautiful open sandy beaches and coves forming the Heritage Coastline. It is here you will see Lindisfarne, Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh Castles rising above the beaches beckoning you to explore. Visit Holy Island but make sure you return before the tide cuts you off! Take a boat ride to the Farne Islands and step into one of Europe's most exciting wildlife habitats where you'll get close to thousands of birds and Grey Seals.

A 15 minute drive will bring you to the pretty village of Rothbury in an' Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty' situated on the banks of the River Coquet. Rising above Rothbury to the south are the wonderful Simonside Hills, a walkers paradise. In the valley dramatically set into the hillside you’ll find Cragside House, the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity and owned by the National Trust. If you're a golfer, you must have a round on Rothbury’s 18 hole scenic golf course.

Immerse yourself in the history of Northumberland -
Walk the Hadrian's Wall and see how the Roman's lived.
Visit the 16th century Bastle's - fortified farmhouses peculiar to the border raids between England and Scotland.
Visit the Battle of Flodden 1513 site where James IV of Scotland was killed in battle, becoming the last monarch from the British Isles to suffer such a fate.

Drive inland to Kielder Reservoir, cycle (hire available) walk, birdwatch and sail on northern Europe's largest man- made lake. Make sure you look out for red squirrels along the way!
