Overview

The cottages are situated in a small traditional Northumberland fishing village superbly situated on the edge of the glorious sandy beach of Embleton Bay. The village of Low Newton is a ‘no through traffic’ fishing village now mainly owned by the National Trust. Also the surrounding area has been designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Low Newton remains unspoilt and has the benefit of a safe sandy beach, ideal for swimming, sailing and windsurfing. In addition, lovely coastal walks, historic castles (Dunstanburgh, Bamburgh, Lindisfarne, Warkworth) all lie within easy reach. Also close by are Holy Island, the Farne Islands and the Cheviot Hills. The cottages were originally built circa 1815 to act as accommodation for the coastguards during the period of the Napoleonic Wars and retain some of the original features. There are unrivalled views across the bay to Dunstanburgh Castle, with Embleton golf course close by together with two bird hides and sanctuary. Other attractions include safe, large front garden, peace and quiet, fresh sea air and the village pub – 250 yards away. The National Trust owns a five mile stretch of coastline including Embleton Links and Low Newton by the sea. Almost the whole of the square at Low Newton is owned by the Trust, as is Newton Pool, a freshwater lake behind the dunes. The nature reserve is breeding ground to many birds including Blackheaded Gull, Teal, Mute Swan, Dabchick, Sedge Warbler and Reed Bunting, and in winter Goldeneye and Pochard.

Delightful

This has to be the ultimate get-away-from-it-all holiday destination. Low Newton is a small village on the coast with no through traffic and breathtaking views across Embleton Bay towards Dunstanburgh Castle. The cottage is beautifullly presented with a lovely garden. There is next to no mobile phone or internet reception, which only made the holiday better!
