Dark Sky Stay & Gaze Award

Whatever your taste buds delight in, spoil them rotten at Battlesteads pub, hotel and restaurant in Wark, near Hexham.

Most of the food is either grown on site in the two acre gardens and two polytunnels or sourced from artisan producers within 25 miles of the hotel. And it’s all cooked to order by head chef Eddie Shilton and his team.

Originally built as a farmstead in 1747, Battlesteads is now the greenest hotel in Northumberland with multi-award winning eco credentials. Interested guests can enjoy a tour of the green installations, while others simply enjoy the guilt-free pleasure of great food, locally-brewed beer, organic and biodynamic wines and comfy accommodation – all without the chemicals!

Battlesteads offers three options for an eating experience – a more relaxed affair in the bar area; views of the garden and some wildlife-spotting from the conservatory; or a more formal, intimate experience in the main restaurant with its dark wood furnishings and low lighting.

There is ample parking on site and secure storage for cycles.

Overnight stop on the way to Scotland with our 3 dogs

Alan L, Milton Keynes
Dogs are allowed in the bar and conservatory area and we enjoyed a tasty evening meal and breakfast. They use a lot of ingredients that are grown in their own garden and use local produce as much as they can. If we visit again would like to try their tasting menu and their was a decent selection to choose from. The full English breakfast was very tasty and to be honest I could have eaten it again.

Excellent food with inexpensive wine

Had the eight course taster menu on first night and was excellent. Would recommend all the courses but the stand out would be the beetroot and the lamb main course. All four of use enjoyed it so much we ate there on our second night. Again food excellent and not expensive.

Great Break with friends

We stopped at the hotel for a break with friends for a few days, so we all had chance to work through the menu. One of our party was a vegan and had no problem selecting from the menu, even to vegan sausages for breakfast. The food is locally sourced as well as vegetables and fruit grown on the premises and the head chef who has been there a good number of years produces some exceptional fayre and his complimentary soups before a meal are to die for. The hotel offers a good selection of beers, wines and spirits as well as a varied menu and an 8 course taster menu.

Please visit this restaurant if you are in the area, you won't be disappointed. We were treated so well all the way through our meals. Staff were great and the food was better. I would certainly recommend the chicken Kiev.

Great food! Friendly staff.

A lovely menu and good food with a good wine list and friendly staff. We chatted until late but were allowed to do so despite being the last there.
