Dark Sky Stay & Gaze Award

Whatever your taste buds delight in, spoil them rotten at Battlesteads pub, hotel and restaurant in Wark, near Hexham.

Most of the food is either grown on site in the two acre gardens and two polytunnels or sourced from artisan producers within 25 miles of the hotel. And it’s all cooked to order by head chef Eddie Shilton and his team.

Originally built as a farmstead in 1747, Battlesteads is now the greenest hotel in Northumberland with multi-award winning eco credentials. Interested guests can enjoy a tour of the green installations, while others simply enjoy the guilt-free pleasure of great food, locally-brewed beer, organic and biodynamic wines and comfy accommodation – all without the chemicals!

Battlesteads offers three options for an eating experience – a more relaxed affair in the bar area; views of the garden and some wildlife-spotting from the conservatory; or a more formal, intimate experience in the main restaurant with its dark wood furnishings and low lighting.

There is ample parking on site and secure storage for cycles.

Disappointed to say the least!

Battlesteads for a Saturday lunch after a walk has always been a treat especially this time of year because bluebells along the river banks are a joy. Four of us did just that last weekend. The upgrade of the hotel is outstanding. An impressively beautifully designed interior awaits. Unfortunately the soulless welcome upon entering was disappointing, the food uninspiring and the service was functional but robotic served by young people with neither personality nor understanding of customer service. The fact they were wearing 'trainee' badges may have something to do with it but the whole ambience of warm friendly service was lost. I hope our next visit (if we do return) will be an improvement.

Certainly worth a detour

Given that we were going to be in the area, we booked here for dinner (reservations recommended) based upon earlier TA reviews. The welcome was warm and our table was ready despite a busy service. We did not choose wine, so no comments on their wine list, however there is a very good selection of hand pulled boutique beers (the drinkable, not the quirky, ones!!). The a la carte menu has a good choice of imaginative starters and mains (too often it's the same type of options - here is pleasantly refreshing). Our choices of beef cheek, cajun chicken (in a creamy sauce with fresh coriander) and a goats cheese ravioli were all very good. Prices are sensible and the service is very good too.

8 course taster menu, with recommended drinks paring. Brilliant

We stayed at the Hotel, & ate in on all of our 3 night stay. The 8 course taster menu, meals chosen from the restaurant menu & breakfasts were all splendid! The soups were the nicest I have tasted- particularly the mushroom with truffle. The beef cheek were melt in your mouth & the desert chef excelled. The focus on local product with skilled cooking made the food exceptional. If you enjoy your food book here!

Exceptional food and service

We had the eight course taster menu and it was one of the best meals I have ever had. The food was imaginative, tasted fantastic, the service was great and the accompanying wines were perfectly chosen. It was great to be able to talk to the chef who is clearly very talented. Look forward to trying it again.

Dog friendly in the bar

Always good to find a Dog Friendly pub which serves great food too! Called in after a long walk for a drink and asked about bringing in the dog for a meal on another day. As they said it was ok in the bar and smaller lounge/restaurant area (not the main restaurant), we booked for the following night. So glad we did, as the food was excellent. As well as traditional fare, the menu is very cosmopolitan and covers a number of countries including Moroccan and Mexican. The staff were very nice and we both enjoyed a great meal.
