Dark Sky Stay & Gaze Award

Whatever your taste buds delight in, spoil them rotten at Battlesteads pub, hotel and restaurant in Wark, near Hexham.

Most of the food is either grown on site in the two acre gardens and two polytunnels or sourced from artisan producers within 25 miles of the hotel. And it’s all cooked to order by head chef Eddie Shilton and his team.

Originally built as a farmstead in 1747, Battlesteads is now the greenest hotel in Northumberland with multi-award winning eco credentials. Interested guests can enjoy a tour of the green installations, while others simply enjoy the guilt-free pleasure of great food, locally-brewed beer, organic and biodynamic wines and comfy accommodation – all without the chemicals!

Battlesteads offers three options for an eating experience – a more relaxed affair in the bar area; views of the garden and some wildlife-spotting from the conservatory; or a more formal, intimate experience in the main restaurant with its dark wood furnishings and low lighting.

There is ample parking on site and secure storage for cycles.

Newly refurbished with an excellent menu

Penny A,
Enjoyed an evening meal here on New Year's eve. Lovely menu with a variety to suit all tastes. The furnishings are beautiful and the ambience very pleasant.

Best ever meal

We visited on our anniversary , we have been in before but not since the new extension. It's a really nice pleasant atmosphere and when we arrived it was busy but not over crowded thankfully. The staff were fabulous. The meal itself was the best meal we have eaten to date. The menu was different from the norm but not odd. The presentation was perfect and the flavours were superb. Red wine was at the perfect temperature. This meal really made our day very special. I really wish the place all the best in their new building. The effort they make should guarantee them the success they deserve.

We visited The Battlesteads to celebrate our wedding anniversary and a birthday and were not disappointed in any way at all. We had the Tasting Menu with the accompanying Wine Flight, which was extremely good value in itself. It was a quiet night, midweek. The newly refurbished dining room has a lovely ambience. Service was friendly and efficient and, crucially, consistent, with one waitress attending to our food needs and the wine served by one member of bar staff. The 8 course tasting menu provided a few excellent highlights and the remaining courses were never less than good. Particularly good were the Ceviche of Tuna with "Seaweed" and a Goats Cheese ice cream. The first course Anti-pasti was a confusing dish with no real coherence but the only real criticism that I might drag up is that the cheeseboard (shared between two) was... parsimonious. The cheeses were well chosen and delicious - so, MORE, please! If I were to be really and truly picky I might add that the homemade chutney served with the cheeseboard was harsh and under matured and that the dried bananas really had no place on that plate at all. Looking forward to returning and doing it all again when the menu changes.

Christmas wreath making day with lunch

Super day out. Made a Christmas wreath under the careful eye of an expert. All materials were provided. The three course lunch was excellent in all respects, with two glasses of wine. Coffee was served on arrival and a glass of mulled wine was enjoyed by all half way through the morning. A must for next years calender

Excellent find in the heart of Northumberland.

Helen A,
What a wonderful find! Found this place on Travelzoo. Off peak deal with an 8 course taster menu. This was absolutely superb. The flavours in each dish were divine. All the food is locally sourced, the meats, cheeses, the vegetables which they grow in their own polytunnels. Homemade bread, jams, sauces, purées etc. The whole hotel is geared towards sustainability with a biomass boiler system and solar panels to heat the water and the hotel. The restaurant has a wonderful ambience, candles, beautiful China etc. Service was impeccable. Can't praise it enough. Very good value indeed.
