Dark Sky Stay & Gaze Award

Whatever your taste buds delight in, spoil them rotten at Battlesteads pub, hotel and restaurant in Wark, near Hexham.

Most of the food is either grown on site in the two acre gardens and two polytunnels or sourced from artisan producers within 25 miles of the hotel. And it’s all cooked to order by head chef Eddie Shilton and his team.

Originally built as a farmstead in 1747, Battlesteads is now the greenest hotel in Northumberland with multi-award winning eco credentials. Interested guests can enjoy a tour of the green installations, while others simply enjoy the guilt-free pleasure of great food, locally-brewed beer, organic and biodynamic wines and comfy accommodation – all without the chemicals!

Battlesteads offers three options for an eating experience – a more relaxed affair in the bar area; views of the garden and some wildlife-spotting from the conservatory; or a more formal, intimate experience in the main restaurant with its dark wood furnishings and low lighting.

There is ample parking on site and secure storage for cycles.

Fantastic Sunday Lunch!

splacchino, Leeds, United Kingdom
Booked a table at the Battlesteads for Sunday lunch. Was impressed that we could book on the day too. The venue has been decorated to a high standard and has a lovely country inn feel. There are a choice of areas to sit which I thought was good. The room at the front of property which is bright and modern and perfect for children. They also have the bar area which is a little darker and cosier and then the sunny conservatory which overlooks the beautiful gardens. On a warm day the gardens would be the perfect spot to enjoy a drink and lunch/dinner. We opted for the carvery and it was one of the nicest carverys I’ve ever had. Three different meats (pork, beef and lamb) and you could choose up to two. They also offered roast beef cooked either well done or medium which was a great idea. Lots of delicious veggies and as many roasties and Yorkshire puds as you wanted! Perfect!! Service was friendly but a little disorganised as our drinks order was missed but apart from that couldn’t fault the restaurant. Looked like a lovely venue for a county style wedding too - I spied a lovely marque in the garden area.

Weekend away

Sonia W,
Food was delicious and looked pretty on the plate. Catered very well for veggies. Even had veggie sausages for breakfast

Great restaurant

Been here twice during our holiday. The first time, we were soaking wet after spending a rainy day camping out, but we were accepted into the restaurant anyway. The food was amazing, both the main course and the desert! Also nice that we got a small vegetarian amuse on the house while waiting for the food. The second time, we had to wait a while before we could be seated (there's a nice lobby where you can have a drink), but the food was great once more.

What a surprise

Stopped for lunch. The walk inside the building to the restuarant was a bit bleak. The conservatory restaurant itself is bright and cheerful with views of the garden. The food cannot be faulted and the service courteous
