Dark Sky Stay & Gaze Award

Whatever your taste buds delight in, spoil them rotten at Battlesteads pub, hotel and restaurant in Wark, near Hexham.

Most of the food is either grown on site in the two acre gardens and two polytunnels or sourced from artisan producers within 25 miles of the hotel. And it’s all cooked to order by head chef Eddie Shilton and his team.

Originally built as a farmstead in 1747, Battlesteads is now the greenest hotel in Northumberland with multi-award winning eco credentials. Interested guests can enjoy a tour of the green installations, while others simply enjoy the guilt-free pleasure of great food, locally-brewed beer, organic and biodynamic wines and comfy accommodation – all without the chemicals!

Battlesteads offers three options for an eating experience – a more relaxed affair in the bar area; views of the garden and some wildlife-spotting from the conservatory; or a more formal, intimate experience in the main restaurant with its dark wood furnishings and low lighting.

There is ample parking on site and secure storage for cycles.

Weekend away for our special birthdays

An absolutely fantastic weekend We stayed in the superior double room which was top class, lovely and warm and cosy as was the hotel We had the 8 course taster menu with the wine pairing .Food and service was excellent. We were given a glass of champagne before our meal by the welcoming host for our special birthdays a lovely touch. Extremely good value for money. Will definitely go back again just a short ride to Hexham and the Dark Sky Observatory to the rear of the hotel as well was a great experience

We arrived at The Battlesteads, unfortunately, we didn't receive the warm welcome, as stated in their website. It was abrupt and impersonal. The room was well equipped, ironing board, iron, tissues, fresh fruit, tea, coffee and homemade biscuits. However, the bed was small for a double, and creaked. We were in bedroom 8. We were abruptly woken up at approximately 0700 hrs, as our bedroom was above a door that banged. It was maybe the kitchen door. There is also a snag list in the room, asking the customer to tell the owners, if there are any problems with anything in the room, surely a member of the housekeeping team, should regularly check rooms. The tasting menu, looked the part, however, lack flavour and seasoning, apart from the slow cooked beef cheeks and the cheese and biscuits. The second night we ate in the restaurant. We had a rack of lamb. The cost was £37.50 for two. It arrived with a small ramekin of mashed potato and a side of roasted veg, the potato and roasted vegetables, were only enough for 1 person, so we ordered side of green vegetables. We were not offered desert or cheese and biscuits. Or coffee. Breakfast was nothing special. The staff we unwelcoming, apart from Daniella. The departure was worse than the arrival. The lady who checked us out, was only interested in taking payment. We were really looking forward to this short break, unfortunately, what was promised on their website did not materialise.

Good food, shame about the welcome and the service

I went today after a recommendation. We waited a while to be greeted and then it wasn't a friendly welcome. Service was slow and waitress didn't know her menu.

Great food

Called in for lunch after a morning site seeing. Menu very limited for vegetarians. Whilst looking at the menu the chef walked through the bar. He smelt so strongly of cigarettes smoke we decided not to stay for our meal. The rear door into the garden was also littered with cigarette ends. Very disappointed.
