Winners announced at North East England Tourism Awards 2017

Tourism businesses from across the North East came together last night to celebrate the success and importance of the tourism industry in the region. The glittering ceremony held at The Boiler Shop in partnership with Crowne Plaza Newcastle was hosted by BBC Radio Newcastle breakfast show presenter Alfie Joey.

A remarkable 32 businesses out of the 53 that were shortlisted were from Northumberland and out of the 15 categories, achieved an impressive 9 gold awards.  It was a triumphant night for the accommodation businesses winning 6 of the 9 gold awards. The team at South Tynedale Railway scooped two gold awards, wowing the judges in the Dog Friendly Business and Small Visitor Attraction of the Year categories. St. Cuthbert’s House Bed & Breakfast in Seahouses proved that they maintain their high standards year on year, winning Bed & Breakfast of the Year for the fourth time, having also won it in 2016, 2013 and 2010.

Northumberland businesses picked up 8 silvers, 9 bronze and 6 highly commended. The top three finalists in each category will have the chance to enter the VisitEngland Awards for Excellence 2018. Last year, the North East was well represented with five businesses achieving national success. Northumberland businesses Battlesteads Hotel & Restaurant and St Cuthbert’s House both came away with gold, whilst Rockliffe Hall Hotel, Golf & Spa, The Tankerville Arms, and Beamish, the Living Museum of the North, were all finalists.
