South Tynedale Railway - Full Steam Ahead to Slaggyford

Work on a £5.6m redevelopment project on South Tynedale Railway (STR) is gathering pace, thanks to a £4.25m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Part of the package is an extension to Slaggyford, but this expansion could also be the first step for the STR to achieve its ultimate goal of joining with the main line at Haltwhistle.  The South Tynedale Railway have appointed Carlisle based family firm Cubby Construction to prepare the track bed from Lintley Halt to Slaggyford Station and deliver a new car park there for visitors.

Slaggyford closed on the 3rd May 1976 leaving local communities devastated. The Society has just held its weekend commemoration of that sad time. The old track bed is still in place but major preparation work is needed before the narrow gauge track can be laid. The car park will be just over from the station and the new signal box.

Society General Manager, Heather Palmer said: “This is an exciting time in our history where we upgrade and add to our beautiful Heritage attraction, but also prepare the ground to reach the second original station on the old Alston Branch Line. The preparation of the track bed must be completed in such a way to facilitate future smooth running of our trains and to protect our heritage structures along the way. We have worked with Cubby Construction before and I am delighted that we will be working with this excellent local company again on this part of the project”.

Cubby’s begin the 16-week project on the 16th May and a spokesperson for Cubby’s said: “We are delighted to have been awarded works on the next phase of this important project within the local community and look forward to continuing to provide our expertise to enable STRPS to achieve their goals.”
