Get yourself ready for Christmas away from the hustle and bustle of the high street with Christmas shopping, trips to see Father Christmas and festive days out in some truly magical places.

The National Trust offers lots of festive days out for you right here in the North East: here’s a taster of what’s on offer in the run up to Christmas…

Fairs, markets and shopping

National Trust shops have an exclusive range of unique gifts for Christmas, making them great places to pick up that something special. There are also some lovely opportunities to pick up unique and locally made gifts at fairs and markets.

Frost Fayre, Washington Old Hall, Sun 22 Nov, 11am – 4pm

Christmas Craft Fair, Souter Lighthouse, Sat 28 & Sun 29 Nov, 10am – 5pm

Christmas Fair, Seaton Delaval Hall, Sat 28 & Sun 29 Nov, 11am – 3pm

Get that festive feeling and start your Christmas with a visit to the annual Seaton Delaval Hall Christmas Fair. Visit a variety of stalls selling all sorts of festive treats, gifts and decorations in the beautifully decorated Central Hall and enjoy carol singing, Christmas crafts and seasonal food and drink.

Gibside Festive Markets, Sat 5 & 19 Dec, 10am – 3pm

Stock up on delicious festive goodies direct from local producers at Gibside’s festive markets. With a special Christmas atmosphere, live music and mulled wine, a festive trip to Gibside is perfect for the whole family.

Festive days out

To get into the festive spirit, head to National Trust places for some very special Christmas days out and enjoy some bygone traditions or create some new ones for yourself.

Christmas at Wallington, weekends in Dec, 10.30 – 3.30pm

Enjoy the beautiful decorations and festive atmosphere at Wallington on weekends throughout December. Admire the Christmas trees from the smallest one hiding in the one of the dolls’ houses to the largest standing 30 feet tall in the courtyard. You can also make festive things, hear stories with Mrs Christmas, pick up gifts in the dedicated Christmas shop and tuck into festive treats in the Café.

Christmas by Twilight, Wallington, Fri 11 Dec, 6 – 8pm

See Wallington in a different light - visit after dark and see the house beautifully decorated for Christmas and illuminated by candles. Enjoy festive music and refreshments in the Central Hall and do some Christmas shopping in our special Christmas shop. Christmas by Candlelight, Gibside, Thurs 3 & 17 Dec, 7pm

Enjoy festive music in the chapel with the North East Concert Band on the 3 December and the North East Gospel Choir on the 17 December. These candlelit concerts are the perfect way to get into the festive spirit with beautiful music, mulled wine and mince pies. Get in touch to book your ticket.

Christmas family trail & Christmas lunch, Cragside, every Fri, Sat & Sun from 4 Dec

Enjoy beautiful decorations, delicious food, traditional gifts and treats and festive winter walks at Cragside. Families can enjoy the 12 Days of Christmas trail - follow the baubles through the woodland and discover some of the stories of Christmas at Cragside. Then treat yourself to a festive lunch or cosy up with a mug of hot chocolate in the courtyard and toast marshmallows in the warm glow of the fire pits – the perfect way to keep nice and snug on a chilly winter’s day.

Visits to Father Christmas

Making a visit to Father Christmas adds that extra bit of sparkle to the festive season for little ones, and even more so in enchanting woodland grottos, beautiful houses or lighthouses.

Father Christmas at Souter Lighthouse, every Sat & Sun 5 – 20 Dec, 12 – 5pm

Enjoy a magical festive experience. Arrive at Souter, post your letter to Father Christmas and embark on a walk and story with Mrs Christmas. Stumble across Father Christmas's hut hidden away in a quiet corner of the wildlife garden and spend some time chatting with the big man himself. Then it's off to create some woodland crafts and warm up with hot chocolate and marshmallows. Call ahead to book your place.

Festive wreath making

Get crafty this festive season and make your own wreathes and garlands using natural materials.
