Race for national award bringing people together

There are just days left to vote for Northumberland in the 2015 British Travel Awards.

Nominated for Best UK Holiday County/Destination against Cornwall, Devon and Pembrokeshire, recent feedback from the official Awards team suggests Northumberland is running a close second to current leaders Cornwall.

Northumberland Tourism have been thrilled with the level of support throughout the campaign.  Local businesses and attractions such as award-winning St Cuthbert’s House B&B and Bamburgh Castle have been key to the push for success by consistently encouraging their social media followers to vote.

This year has also seen the support of the Northumberland Ambassadors, members of the tourism industry who completed the Know Your Northumberland programme earlier in the year.

Organised by Active Northumberland and accredited by Northumberland College, the programme was set up to improve the skills and knowledge of employees and volunteers working at visitor-serving businesses across the county.

All staff at Northumberland Tourism attended at least one of the courses with Bethany Gallacher, PR and Social Media Assistant at Northumberland Tourism, completing all seven courses required to become a Gold Ambassador.

Bethany said: “Aside from developing my own understanding of the county, the best thing about the Know Your Northumberland programme was seeing the joy everyone got from learning about Northumberland.  To know they would utilise this knowledge for the benefit of their guests and visitors was a really proud moment – for everyone involved.

It is fantastic to see this pride has continued on after the course has ended for the year, with the ambassadors helping us to share the Northumberland spirit in our campaign to become the best holiday county in the UK.

Regardless of the outcome of the awards, I think this process of working together is the real winning result.”

Voting closes on Wednesday 30th September with the winner announced on 25 November 2015 at the Gala Awards Ceremony.
