Clock ticking for final entries for cross-border cycle challenge

Clock ticking for final entries for cross-border cycle challenge

Cyclists are being reminded that they have less than two weeks left to sign up for the cross-border Wooler Wheel Borderlands cycle sportive.

The 170km cross-border route, which is the first of the inaugural Wooler Wheel Triad challenge, takes in a number of sections of what will make up the Friends Life Tour of Britain stage in September. Other routes of 100km and 60km are available, while there is a dedicated junior sportive route of 30km.

Those riders who complete the 170km route on Saturday, May 16 and follow it up with 200km Big 'Un - another cross-border event - on July 25 and the 100km Classic on October 3 will become members of the WW 300 Club, having completed more than 300miles and climbed over 6000 metres - higher than Mont Blanc. They will be suitably rewarded with specially designed insignia.

Beth Mills from Wooler Cycle Hub said: "The Wooler Wheel Borderlands is a great opportunity to kick start the sportive season and also has accessible rides for those wanting to take their first pedal turns in the sportive world, or just enjoy a wonderful ride through incredible countryside.

"The closing date for entries is Sunday, May 3 so it is important that riders don't leave their entry until the last minute, particularly if they are planning on attempting to complete the Wooler Wheel Triad - the ultimate cycle sportive challenge."

Entries for all three Wooler Wheel events in 2015 are open via the British Cycling website, and more information on them can also be found on the Wooler Cycle Hub website - www.woolerwheel.com

2015 Wooler Wheel route descriptions:

Saturday, May 16 - WW Borderlands

A repeat of the sportive introduced in 2014, with routes of 60, 100 and 170km, and a dedicated junior sportive of 30km.

The 170km ride takes in some of the most beautiful and toughest cycling routes in north Northumberland and the Scottish Borders, iconic viewpoints, including Lindisfarne and Bamburgh castles, Scott's View near St Boswells, and the memorable 200m climb up to Whitton Edge in the Scottish Cheviots.

Entries close on May 3

Saturday, July 25 - WW Big 'Un

A complete cross-border circumnavigation of the High Cheviots on quiet roads in Northumberland and Scotland covering 209km (130miles), with an estimated total ascent of 3,200m and a 6 mile unrelenting climb up to the maximum altitude of 396m.

On reaching Kielder Castle, around the halfway mark and in the middle of Kielder Forest, riders will not only be met with sight of a feed station but also the opportunity to grab a free sports massage. This ride avoids stretches of the busy A68 trunk road.

Entries close July 12

Saturday, October 3 - WW Classic

The original Wooler Wheel, and still a firm favourite. With routes of 50 or 100km, which skirt the Northumberland National Park and the High Cheviots and reach right up to the River Tweed. There are superb views of the High Cheviots, the beautiful Northumberland coast and the Eildon and Lammermuir Hills in Scotland.

A great introduction for first time sportivers, but it is still demanding for experienced cyclists and a perfect way to wind down the season for elite riders.
