Local Food With A Truly Great Taste

A Northumbrian farm shop has been recognised for producing some of the most delicious food in the country at this years Great Taste Awards 2014 organised by The Guild of Fine Food.

The Blagdon Farm Shop, situated in the Milkhope Centre, has received the Gold Awards for 2 of its hallmark products, both of which are produced on their own farm.

The awards are acknowledged as the benchmark for speciality food and drink and have been described as the ‘Oscars’ of the food world and the ‘epicurean equivalent of the Booker prize’.

The first winner was their very own, dry aged Belted Galloway Sirloin Steak which was described by the judges as having “a pleasant nuttiness, and a very distinctive and interesting flavour” as well as being “very juicy”.

Second up was the Blagdon Estate Honey which is harvested by bees from fields on the farm and was described as a “very attractive pale honey with a beautifully smooth consistency “ and having ”a really delicious floral flavour.”

Shop Manager Jo Celerier said, “We are very proud of these two products, our Belted Galloway beef is the mainstay of our butchery, the beef is reared on the farms meadows and wetlands and is then looked after carefully by our butchers at the shop. The beekeeper Ian is a very important part of the farm. He sites the hives in the right place so the bees can pollinate the crops, he also puts them near hedgerows and wildflower meadows so the bees can forage pollen to make our honey. The bees and their honey are a huge part of our farming system, this award is testament to their hard work really!”

The 2 awards are the latest to add to a collection received by Blagdon Farm Shop from the Great Taste Awards in previous years including their own Gammon, free range chickens and steak pie and the award logo is the sign you can trust when buying food and drink in your local, quality retailer.
