Diving chalet transformation creates new budget beds for visitors

Former run-down diving chalets in a Northumberland coastal resort have been transformed into affordable accommodation for visitors travelling on a budget.

The Hides, created by tourism aficionado Sarah Gregory, will provide much needed affordable accommodation for families, couples, groups and independent travellers visiting Northumberland.

Sarah - who with her mother Julie, father Colin and brother Simon - owns and runs the successful Springhill Farm Accommodation holiday business on the Gregory’s 400-acre working farm near Seahouses. Spotting a gap in the market for affordable, single night accommodation in the popular seaside resorts of Seahouses and North Sunderland, Sarah purchased the chalets earlier this year.

Part of the former Diving Lodge public house in North Sunderland, the chalets had fallen into disrepair before Sarah set about transforming them into five, bed-only, en suite ‘Hides’ with shower facilities, each sleeping up to four people.

Said Sarah: “There is nothing quite like the Hides in the locality that gives bed-only accommodation options for visitors, yet that isn’t a backpackers or a bunkhouse.

“Alongside our five-star gold self catering properties and camp site, we turned one of our cowsheds into a bunkhouse four years ago, after realising there was a gap in the market for affordable but quality accommodation with single night availability too.

“That demand remains today as people – especially among smaller groups like school parties and clubs as well as walking, diving and cycling parties. People want to be able to enjoy Northumberland on a budget basis with accommodation that is flexible, affordable and a step up from camping but less formal than a bed and breakfast.”

And while bed-only may sound basic, holidayers at the Hides have access to Wi-Fi, Freeview television as well as their own kitchen and dining area, laundry and extra facilities such as a drying room plus bike and secure storage for bulky holiday items.

Northumberland Tourism general manager Jude Leitch said: “The Hides are a super concept and help ensure that Northumberland is truly able to offer a broad and versatile range of accommodation for visitors.

“Today’s travellers have high standards when it comes to accommodation. Budget or not, people are looking for quality provision. Extras that were once considered luxuries like en suite facilities, Wi-Fi and Freeview television are now viewed as staple by many people on their holidays and which Sarah has integrated into the Hides, ramping up bed-only accommodation’s offering for visitors.”

The Hides are available to hire as individual units on a nightly basis, or as a block booking sleeping up to 20 guests.
