Lindisfarne Gospels Durham Art Competition

Communities across the North East are invited to take part in a number of special workshops with a professional artist in order to create artworks inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels.

Artist Vicky Holbrough will lead three sessions for individuals and families, assisting them in creating pieces of work, a selection of which will then be chosen for inclusion in the Lindisfarne Gospels Durham exhibition.

The Lindisfarne Gospels will be on show in a unique exhibition in Durham University’s Palace Green Library from 1 July to 30 September.  This unmissable exhibition tells the tale of St Cuthbert and this amazing book, its creation, its incredible journey and its special symbolism for the people of the North.

Dr Keith Bartlett Lindisfarne Gospels Programme Director said: “The Lindisfarne Gospels is a beautiful book and the illuminated pages with their portraits, decoration and ornamental text represent the pinnacle of achievement of Anglo-Saxon Northumbrian art.  There is real excitement across the region in the build-up to the Lindisfarne Gospels going on display.  This is a great opportunity for residents of all ages to take part in a creative project and to work alongside a professional artist.  A selection of artworks will be exhibited within Palace Green Library for the duration of the exhibition.

The workshops are aimed at ages 8 to adult - younger participants may need adult support and all children should be accompanied by a responsible adult.)

The first workshop will take place at Berwick Maltings on 7 April.  The theme of this session is Illustrated Text and participants will combine writing and illustration to produce their own relief sculpture using clay modelling and casting.

The Museum of Hartlepool is the venue for the second workshop – Artist Books on 28 April.  Using a variety of papers, textures and fabrics, budding artists will learn how to make and design simple books and their covers.

Winged Creatures is the theme of the third and final workshop on 18 May and this takes place in the Great Kitchen, Durham Cathedral. Taking the Gospels as inspiration, this workshop will involve creating a new winged creature. Participants will make 3D sculptures using wire and paper.

The hour long drop-in sessions will take place at 10am, 11am, 12,30pm, 1.30pm and 2.30pm at all venues.  Places are limited to 15 people per session and places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
