A wonderful surprise - exceeded all expectations!

Had never stayed here before, and just found it as a suitably located place which was in the right location for a one night stay on the way back from a trip. Even before we arrived I was impressed - there was the potential for us to be arriving as late as 11pm and when I called in a panic having not considered that I might be unable to check in at that time, the owner was more than accommodating and quickly put plans in place to ensure we would be OK no matter what time we arrived. We actually ended up arriving around 6pm, and hadn't eaten, so decided to have our meal in the Swan as it was convenient. The menu is fantastic, so much choice we almost couldn't make a decision! When asking for one part of a meal to be omitted (me and my other half are both a little fussy!) we were instantly offered extra of another item to compensate - something that doesn't happen in many places. The staff were friendly, chatty, and seemed genuinely interested in talking to us, and in making our whole stay the most pleasant experience possible. The rooms are in a little annexe alongside the conservatory of the pub, which almost makes it feel like you have a tiny cottage rather than just a room. The room was spacious, clean, and well outfitted with plenty of supplies to make tea, coffee etc. The only problem we had with the room was that the light from outside that lights the walkway along the rooms was quite bright, and the curtains not dark enough to really block it out very well - but we are people who really like a dark room so this may not be an issue for most people. The shower could potentially do with updating - I struggled to balance the hot/cold taps right but again this is because I'm used to simpler ones, and it still worked perfectly well enough. Breakfast in the morning was again fantastic, plenty of food and cooked fresh ready for the time we had chosen. Overall, for the price we paid this is a bloody marvellous place to stay, and I would (and have already) strongly recommend it to anyone as a great base for exploring the northeast.

Functional, motel style accommodation

The Swan is conveniently situated. The room smelt musty - almost damp and the bathroom furnishings were suffering from wear and tear. Meals in the restaurant were adequate and reasonably priced. The included breakfast was more than sufficient. We were caught out by the arrival time being from 5pm. We had to kick our heels for an hour before the pub opened and we could get into our room. But that wasn't terrible. At 4pm on a Saturday there were no tea shops locally that we could find. The owners and staff were friendly and helpful. We were reminded, on arrival, that the pub was closed on Sunday evenings. We found meals in nearby Morpeth although there weren't lots of options so plan ahead for Sunday evenings.

Only one thing lets it down...

We stayed for two nights earlier this month. On entering Room 5, there was an overpowering smell of damp, which was off-putting to say the least. However, the large room and bathroom were clean and the beds were very comfortable, the bedding being of very good quality. We had two evening meals there...the menu offered a good variety of dishes. The meals were very good, and were of a reasonable price. We had a cooked breakfast on two occasions and these were excellent value. All staff we came across were very welcoming. The hanging baskets round the exterior of The Swan were beautiful. It's such a shame about the damp smell.

Relaxing holiday

Stayed at swan hotel for a week have stayed here many times before and it is always a pleasure to come back staff are friendly helpful and polite Kirsty and Chris the owners are always welcoming food is excellent as always and is all home made portions are really good value for money will always recommend the swan to family and friends if coming to stay in Northumberland rooms clean and tidy and serviced every day. If you don't want to drive to Newcastle the bus stops right outside the swan and it only takes 30 mins to get there.

The Swan at Choppington replied: Many thanks for your lovely review - always a pleasure to see you :D

Big negatives drags it down

mysteryshopper86, United Kingdom
Room 3, single traveller, £55. Continental breakfast (coffee/tea/orange juice/toast/cereals) included, pay £3.50 extra for cooked but no veggie options (they could have included vegetarian sausages for example, imho Cauldron are better than Quorn). Pros: Friendly & helpful staff, best toast ever. Cons: Fairly strong mould/damp smell in room, bath fan noisy and sometime very noisy (ball bearings gone?), other peoples hairs in shower area (in three different places) - YUCK!

The Swan at Choppington replied: Many thanks for your review - I am pleased that you found some aspects of your stay positive and will look into your vegetarian sausage recommendation. I can only apologise for the unacceptable lapse in our housekeeping that you discovered. All the staff and management strive to offer high standards to guests and I am really disappointed that you found this lacking - Kirsty
