TOP DRAWER!!....but spoilt by pathetic moaning guests!!!!

freddiedoncaster, doncaster
Can I just get my gripe out of the way first. (you know who you are,you moaning Minnie's!!) I was a solo traveller, and I can't believe some of the things I advertently heard!!I was obviously sat next to a couple of professionals, who always manage to get items taken off the bill.I couldn't but overhear their scam, and had to bite my lip and sit on my hands.I was dining "in heaven" and "scum of the earth" were sat next to me whi shouldn't be allowed over the threshold of this idyllic hotel, that has been sympathetically restored to the highest of standards. My check in.......superb, my dinner......superb.....OK you've got my drift. Please just give this hidden gem a try.....and ignore all these "folk" who obviously live in a dust free mansion with faultless beds,pillows,paintwork,carpets....I could go on and on!!WELL DONE YOU HARD WORKING GUYS AT DOXFORD!!! Will see you all again soon.

Lovely Sunday lunch

sheepygold, london
I have been bringing my in-laws laws to Doxford Hall for the last few years to have afternoon tea and there has been a consistent pattern of superb food but lacklustre service. This year I decided to try Sunday lunch. The setting was more formal with crisp white linen and silver service. Three of the party had starters and then we had 4 different mains - salmon, beef, lamb and pork. The meat was all great quality and served with excellent Yorkshire Puddings and a large choice of vegetables which tasted freshly picked though some was a little al dente. We had coffee and truffles in the morning room. The big difference to our afternoon tea experience was the level of service which was friendly, attentive and professional. Normally we have a wander around the lovely gardens but as the weather was nice we made for Holy Island. The cost of the lunch is set and for 2 courses you are looking at around £20.

What a great wee find

anne w, Glasgow, United Kingdom
Stayed last week for a night in the Gardner's cottage room which was great for my partner who smokes as he could go right outside, room was lovely and we had our own parking wee bit of a walk to main hotel lights on the road would have been good staff said there was a torch in the room but did not find it. That aside we wished we had booked for two nights food was excellent and staff very accommodating lovely pool which was bigger than I thought and sauna steam room were a bonus. Hotel is out of the road a bit, I would not say remote s some people have commented but quite is what we wanted so no complaints about that. Would recommend this lovely hotel enjoyed it so much we are thinking about going to have a stay in one of the other hotels in the same group.

hidden gem

what a fantastic hotel stayed here for one night just wish i'd booked a few more, staff very helpful and pleasant especially the head waiter in the restaurant on the night we ate there I didn't fancy anything on the menu ( I had fish for lunch that day ) because two fish dishes that evening and I asked for a steak ( not on the menu that evening ) not a problem for the waiter and chef and what was served to me was one of the best fillet steaks iv'e had in a long time thank you for that . and the the chefs signature sweet well what can I say bellisimo....we stayed in the gardeners cottage ( aln ) a credit to the hotel best way to describe......all in all you wont find any faults in this hotel so that's why I've given it a 5/5........well done doxford and the staff....

A good base to visit a delightful county

RGYorkshire, Yorkshire, England
Northumberland is a truly delightful county and Doxford Hall is a conveniently located country hotel being 15 minutes from Alnwick (with its castle and garden), 15 to 20 minutes from the spectacular coast, and 30 minutes from Rothbury and Cragside. The hotel is a large and rather grand country house set in some very well kept gardens. Overall we found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Our room was large, if somewhat dated in style. Being in the middle of nowhere eating in the hotel's restaurant was the only option unless we had wanted a reasonable drive to the nearest pub. However, we were well rewarded with the quality of food. Good quality local produce carefully prepared and very well presented. Flavours were precise and the AA's two star rating is well deserved. The only weakness was with the service inasmuch as whilst the overall friendliness of the hotel was evident there was a lacking of attention to detail (for example, butter cleared from the table before a starter which came with a really nice treacle bed, a delay between the clearing of the main course and taking the order for puddings, no one coming to ask if coffee was wanted etc.). We enjoyed a very good night's sleep in a comfortable bed. Food at breakfast was also very good but, again, a lack of attention to detail with the service was evident (for example no one checking the breakfast buffet so guests were having to ask for the orange juice to be topped up, for more bowls, for more butter etc). Despite the niggles with service we left having been pleased with our visit and would recommend Doxford Hall for a visit to this hidden gem of a county.
