Overview

Visitors to Corbridge Roman Town can walk along the main street of this Roman garrison town, flanked by the remains of granaries, a fountain house, markets, workshops and temples.

Astride the intersection of Roman Dere Street and Stanegate, Corbridge was initially the site of a series of important forts. But after Hadrian's Wall was fully commissioned it developed into a prosperous town, a tempting leave-centre for off-duty Wall garrisons.

Today, you can still walk through the town's streets and experience a time-capsule of Roman life. You can also discover Roman armour and trinkets uncovered with the Corbridge Hoard at the museum. The Hoard was one of the most significant finds in Roman history, providing us with a fascinating insight into the life of a soldier on the Wall. The museum is also home to the Corbridge Collection, the largest of the Hadrian's Walls collections.

For history buffs!

Small market town, steeped in local history. Lots to explore. Some unique shops to browse. A profusion of cafes to relax in and enjoy afternoon tea. A very nice location for a couple of hours.

To expensive

matthew h, Peterborough
Not much to write about other than trying to charge over £7 per adult is disgraceful. We were not the only couple that got straight back into the car, after being put off by the price!!! Maybe you should reconsider the cost so more people would be inclined to pay

Living Archaelogy From 1st-3rd Centuries (CE)

Appinhighlander, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Located just off of the A69 and junction with A68. Phenomenal excavations and museum, showing what life was like for Roman soldiers living on the northern England frontier.

An interesting visit with audio tour

weekenderinthesun, England
This is quite different to most of the places along Hadrian's wall, never having been a fort as such but more of a Roman town. It's really quite difficult to interpret, even with a guided tour and underfoot is quite difficult as it's very stony and lots of different levels so be warned, could be really problematic if it's been wet. The museum is housing a temporary exhibition about the Roman cavalry, but the museum will be closed at the end of this summer for a full refurbishment over the winter.

A really really lovely village feel. Lots of good eateries, pubs and coffee shops. Plus gift shops and pretty scenery.
