Join our National Park Rangers on one of their favourite walks to the Shepherd’s Cairn. You will begin the walk by following ‘Salter’s Road’, named after 18th century traders who smuggled salt by packhorse from salt pans on the North Northumberland coast to Scotland. You will stop at the Shepherd’s Cairn – a memorial to two shepherds who lost their lives in the winter of 1962. This is a moderate level of walk - of medium length walk of 5-6 miles on hilly ground with rising and falling levels. A reasonable level of fitness is required.
