In the centre of the beautiful Etal village, Etal Castle was built in the mid 14th century by Robert manners as a defence against Scots raisers. The fortified tower house stands in a strategic position by a ford over the River Till, fell to James IV's invading Scots army in 1513, immediately before their catastrophic defeat at nearby Flodden.
The 19th-century chapel displays an award-winning exhibition telling the dramatic story of Flodden, and the Anglo-Scottish border warfare that ended with the accession of James I in 1603.
