Hadrian's Wall is at its most spectacular at the western edge of Northumberland and some of its most famous sites, including Housesteads, Vindolanda and Steel Rigg are within walking distance of one another.
The fortification is dotted with milecastles, temples and fortresses as well as archaeological sites that are still giving us a valuable insight into how the Romans lived almost 2,000 years ago.
Go to places like Vindolanda or Housesteads any weekend during the Summer months and you'll find people re-enacting battles in full costume or explaining how the Romans ate or washed.
