Overview

WELCOME to HENSHAW BARN - a beautiful rustic building deep in the heart of Hadrians Wall country.

During its agricultural life the barn provided storage space for hay and welcome shelter for cattle, now it is a much loved family home for Pauline and John and their two setters.

The focus throughout the barn conversion has been to remain true to the strength and simplicity of the building. Original A-frame beams have been preserved, and french oak beams added to the ground floor. Beautiful oak doors add warmth to the exposed stone, whilst a huge wood burning stove is an additional enhancement. Furniture is predominantly country pine and oak, complemented by opulent fabrics, and squashy sofas smothered in cushions.

Modern amenities matter:- The marriage of the old with the new arises with the installation throughout of super efficient under floor heating; fabulous power showers; ample hot water; wonderfully comfortable beds; snuggly duvets and quality linen; luscious toiletries; and the  luxury of fluffy towels and cosy bathrobes.

As an added enticement chef John provides fresh, locally sourced, seasonal food.. wholesome and substantial breakfasts, and very delicious evening meals....designed to excite the eye and please the palate.

Henshaw Barn is within walking distance of all the major heritage attractions, including the Roman forts of Housesteads and Vindolanda. Annual excavations continue to unearth precious and often priceless artefacts, all of which can be seen in the museums dotted along the length of the Wall.

The picturesque market towns of Hexham and Corbridge lie 12 miles along the Tyne Valley, and are home to delights such as Hexham Abbey, traditional farmers markets and a host of unique independent shops. Great historic houses and castles pepper the region, with beautiful beaches, wild stretches of coast and our magnificent National Park, all within easy reach.

Northumberland is stunning - find out more on our website - and come and visit!

Wonderful B&B with Fantastic Food

themartins117, Simcoe, Canada
We wanted to be conveniently located to Hadrian's Wall, Vindolanda and Housesteads. One of our neighbours had walked the Wall and recommended Henshaw Barn B&B. We contacted Pauline and John and were immediately charmed. Their B&B more than met all our expectations and we highly recommend this lovely and beautiful place with such warm and welcoming hosts. Upon arrival, we were given tea and scones, which was a wonderful introduction to John's impeccable cooking and the excellent food which we enjoyed over the two days of our stay. The dinners were a highlight and the charming Granary bedroom with a private bathroom was so very comfortable and cozy. Especially impressive was the vegetable and fruit garden with the edible flowers that John used for his delicious dishes. We met as strangers but left as friends.

Henshaw Barn replied: Having corresponded - (from your firm booking 12 months ahead of your stay) - we were really excited at the prospect of meeting you - we already felt we were welcoming friends.....and what a pleasure it was to finally meet - but such a shame that your meticulously planned itinerary allowed us only two nights of your company.....! But we are SO pleased that you were happy at Henshaw Barn "this lovely and beautiful place" - and that we matched, not to say exceeded your expectations. Sharing our home with you was very special - and we thank you wholeheartedly for your kind and generous words, and for your warm recommendations. We hope to keep in touch, but in the meantime we hold you close, and send you all our very best wishes, Pauline and John. x :-)

Highly recommended

nigwilc,
Lovely stay , Pauline and John went out of their way to make me feel welcome. John is a superb cook. I will definitely go back. I was walking Hadrian’s Wall solo so it was really nice to be invited to eat with Pauline & John who are really nice and well informed people. Nigel.

Henshaw Barn replied: You were walking the wall solo, and we had no other guests the night of your arrival - so rather than have you eating in splendid isolation, a "kitchen supper" seemed the perfect solution - which I'm glad to say you happily took on board (to be followed by breakfast the next morning.) And it was lovely to sit and chat around our kitchen table, as opposed to more formal dining next door - hugely enjoyable........And in turn, it was so very kind of you (after only a one night stay) to promptly post such a warm, positive and upbeat review. OUR THANKS! It was such a happy evening, and such a pleasure to share our home with you. We like to think (should the opportunity arise) that you may in fact return next year.....and were that to be the case, then we can't help but look forward to that. With all our best wishes, Pauline and John. :-)

The Loveliest Place of All

bosch1500, Tybee Island, Georgia
I came from the States to walk Hadrian's Wall path, booked through a British company. Four nights were booked by them at the end of each destination. Pauline and John were warm and welcoming and infinitely interesting. Their garden supplied most of the fruits and vegetables for the meals, including the edible flower garnishes. My room was well-appointed and very comfortable, and the inn was homey and beautiful and well-appointed with personal touches that made my stay even more welcoming. Pauline...your kind words about my father were so appreciated.

Henshaw Barn replied: "Homey and beautiful" - such a lovely, lovely thing to say - and especially as you were so far away from home, and finding yourself amongst strangers - ( and you were only with us for one night as you were "walking the wall!!!") But it was lovely to meet you, and interesting and informative to exchange"plant knowledge." We do hope the rest of your visit to the U.K. matched, and possibly exceeded your expectations (including your forthcoming visit to York, prior departure.) And we send our thanks to you - both for taking the time out to post a review on your return home, and for your warm recommendations. With all our best wishes, Pauline and John.

Lovely warm hosts with marvelous food

Denise J,
Charming B and B with delightful hosts. Immaculate room with big bathroom. Excellent excellent food. Beautiful rustic walk from the important Roman site Vindolanda. Henshaw itself is charming Northern English village.

Henshaw Barn replied: So very kind of you to say such lovely things about us - and to know how much you appreciated your brief respite at Henshaw Barn on your Hadrian's Wall walk - (which was so very brave of you to attempt, and so very commendable - and such a HUGE achievement!) Thank you for finding time on your return home to post a review, and very special thanks for your appreciation of John's culinary skills, and also for your pleasure in the nurturing comforts we do our very best to provide. With our very best wishes, Pauline and John.

Perfection

Gillian G, Dorchester, United Kingdom
This was our second stay with Pauline and John at Henshaw Barn and it was every bit as wonderful as we remembered. Our bedroom was a haven, the bathroom luxurious and the meals were a delight. The whole atmosphere at Henshaw is one of being gently cared for and revitalised. We always leave feeling refreshed and relaxed. The proximity to so many interesting places in Northumberland make this an ideal base. The breakfasts and evening meals are amazing, a delight for both the eyes and the taste buds. There is always something enchanting that catches the eye, whether it is a art work or a group of late flowering plants in the garden. We look forward to staying again next year, thank you John and Pauline for making our holiday so special.

Henshaw Barn replied: Remembering you with great fondness after meeting last year, we were very much looking forward to seeing you again - and your much anticipated 5 day stay was - as expected - a complete delight. And thank you for posting such a very lovely review - to know that you left us feeling relaxed, recharged, and rejuvenated was more than ample reward. And what a pleasure it was to share our home with you - with our shared values, and opinions - plus a liking and appreciation of similar things, experiences etc....... and not forgetting John's fabulous food! And our heartfelt thanks too for your kind and supportive words during our recent sad loss. Our very warmest wishes, Pauline and John. x
