Wonderful B & B right next to Hadrian's Wall

Stephen S,
Carraw B & B was first rate--a warm welcome by Lea and Kevin after a day of hiking, beautiful Skylark room with magnificent views, and right near Hadrian's wall out in the countryside. Room, breakfast, and everything was marvelous--I just wished we could have stayed one or two nights more. Definitely the place to stay when your hiking the Housestead region of the wall.

Carraw Bed and Breakfast replied: Thank you for taking the time to write your review and your recommendation. We are very pleased that you had a enjoyable overnight stay as part of your walking in the area and that all aspects of your stay were "marvellous". We look forward to seeing you again in the future (for that longer stay). Regards Kevin and Leah

Stunning site, plush but not stuffy rooms, lovely food

kbfenner, Columbia, South Carolina
We stayed in Skylark, in the new Lodge. Every window in the room and in the common area of the Lodge framed a stunning view or a peaceful glade with a view behind it. The bath was spacious and had top quality fittings (although a ledge or larger shelf in the bath, while not strictly within the minimalist ethos, would have been nice--the soap dish was small). There was a useful towel warmer, as well as a combination handheld/mounted shower wand and overhead rain shower head. The bed was super plush and the pillows nicely resilient. The standard bedding is nicely hypoallergenic synthetic fill, but they advise that feather/down is available. Indeed, the unusually thorough and well-written guest handbook nicely invites one to ask. Which we did--because the one drawback I hadn't sussed out from my online research, was that the only place to walk contiguous to the inn is Hadrian's Path---which was, in one direction, seriously bogged by sucky mud for perhaps a twenty-five foot circle where the resident cows had extensively trod. I was not particularly wedded to Hadrian's Path--though that is the reason I suspect most people stay at Carraw--I had just figured on walking the countryside and about the farm. Because of other circumstances of our trip, and because I have no need of them at home, I didn't have muck-suitable boots. The road is not safe, we were advised, to walk along--traffic is too fast and the verge is non-existent, and the fields adjacent to the inn were fenced off with barbed wire and we were advised, not necessarily safe on account of the breeding cows. No matter. Leah suggested several adorable villages for a nice lunch and stroll on country lanes. She will bring you tea and a slice of cake in the lounge in the late afternoon, and a pair of delicious homemade biscuits appeared on our tea tray daily. The supper is nice, although one night, not available because she had a meeting--we missed having it, greatly. A nice simple home-made soup, freshly baked baguette chunks, a wedge of cheddar, salad, tomatoes, a boiled egg, cukes/celery, pickled onions, and pate/porkpie, and half an apple, most, if not all, from local sources. The breakfast was exceptional--a full English, and/or a nice grainy porridge, a flaky smoked salmon and scrambled egg mixture piled atop an English muffin, a fruit smoothie and warm croissant, plus housemade granola, and the usual cereals, yogurts, juices, toast, etc. The honor bar features an awesome local unfiltered cider (Scrumpy), some creative local non-alcoholic sodas and cocktail beverages (shandy and artisanal gin and tonic), as well as beers/ales/etc. and wines. We loved sitting on the terrace and watching the cows and calves do their thing and the weather roll across the Big Sky dome. Other than having a nice place for an easy evening stroll or early morning constitutional, this was absolutely perfect! Leah even laundered a few things for us that I was going to rinse out in the sink!

Carraw Bed and Breakfast replied: Thank you for taking the time to write your extensive review and your recommendation. We are very pleased that you had a very enjoyable short break and that all aspects of your stay met your needs and from the comments in your review even exceeded them. Wonderful!

John172, Uttoxeter, United Kingdom
We used Carraw as a convenient base for exploring the local area and further into Northumberland. A four night stay enabled us to visit many interesting sights and to eagerly return to this exceptional accommodation. We are seasoned travellers in our sixties and have stayed in various b and b classification establishments, ranging from 'not going there again' to 'must revisit'. Carraw was recommended by friends and exceeded expectations. We can honestly say that it is the most comfortable and clean b and b we have ever stayed in, with hosts Leah and Kevin thinking of everything we should need (see other reviews). Pity we couldn't have stayed for longer!

Superb B & B

chutley, UK
We have just returned from a two-week tour of Scotland, and stopped here en route to see Hadrian's wall, for which the Carraw is ideally situated. We stayed in the purpose built Annex, which has beautiful views over the countryside. Our room was spotlessly clean, tastefully furnished and the bathroom has a powerful shower. Guests also have use of a lounge area, equipped with a lovely wood burner - which we didn't need as it was a hot Summer's day. Breakfast was superb and the host was welcoming. A delightful B&B - thoroughly recommended.

Stunning bed and breakfast

Teresa S, Port Adelaide, Australia
What a beautiful new building constructed as a bed and breakfast, it was amazing, could have taken it home! Beautiful views across Northumberland. Large room and bathroom, and very comfortable king size bed. Lovely breakfast. Lounge area had a fire to light if cold enough. Saw little of the hosts but they were friendly upon arrival and at departure. A very comfortable place which would have warranted a longer stay.

Carraw Bed and Breakfast replied: Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We are very pleased that you had a enjoyable stay and more pleased that you left the B&B for other guests to experience. We hope you had a safe trip on departure and look forward to seeing you again in the future. Regards Kevin and Leah.
