Absolutely fabulous! Amazing dinner, very nice rooms, charming host! (Hint: eat here)

We stayed here while hiking Hadrian's Wall with friends. There were 9 of us in five rooms (we all fit). This was a great place to stay. Nice little town that was very pretty, and the B&B was close to the Hadrian's Wall trail (a little over a quarter mile). The rooms were all very charming, and all included an en suite bath. The beds were very comfortable. The stairs were a little steep and winding to take the bags up, but it was manageable. Dinner. Where do I start? We were told to call ahead a couple of days if we wanted dinner. I did this. The host (Denise) was very nice, asked how many people were in our party, and asked if we wanted to be served restaurant style or family style. We chose family style. "Do you like lamb?" Yes! "Wonderful, I will go to the market tomorrow, pick up a nice leg of lamb, and roast it all afternoon." It was the best dinner we had in over two weeks (including time in London). Lamb, roasted vegetables, salad, and a great traditional English dessert. Breakfast the next day was also great. I would stay here again if given the opportunity. There was also an honor bar in the drawing room. Very nice, with reasonable prices, a good selection, and very comfy chairs. The village of Gilsland is fairly limited. Things tend to close around 5pm. The only other restaurant is nearly 1/2 mile away. While we didn't eat there, I cannot imagine the food being better. While the weather was perfect during our stay, we went past the other place on the way out of town. It would be a long slog in the rain, so definitely eat here if you get the opportunity.

What a delightful stay

Troll my profile and you will find that I very seldom hand out 5 star reviews. In order to earn that 5th star from me the lodging needs to surprise and delight me. Brookside Villa did just that. After a long wet day of hiking Hadrian's wall Brookside offered a warm comfortable room and a fantastic dinner. Her dinners are offered to order. And the breakfast was delicious as well. The proprietress prides herself of sourcing locally for her kitchen. She was also very helpfully answered some of our questions regarding trail logistics. Even if you aren't through hiking, Gilsland would make a good base of operations for driving to the various sites on the wall. And you wouldn't do wrong to stay at Brookside for more than one night.

A Perfect Place

We used this wonderful b&b as an overnight stop while walking Hadrian's Wall, with a dog. Denise, the owner welcomed us really warmly & gave us a great introduction to the place. She has thought everything through it great detail. Walkers arriving with muddy boots (& dogs) are welcomed into the practical entrance hall where there is a bench, boot & coat storage & room to manoeuvre, as well as to dry off the dog. Our room on the top floor was really nicely decorated in blue & yellow, with more attention to detail. Lots of towels, toiletries etc, a lovely bathroom. An attractive, practical room with plenty of storage space & comfy beds. There is a charming cosy guests lounge, well stocked with a good selection of wine, beer, soft drinks & hot drinks, which just go on the bill. We had a good dinner in the nearby Samson Inn. The Brookside Villa breakfast & packed lunch were the best we had during the whole trip. Definitely a 5-star place whether you're walking or not.

An excellent host

Two storey stone property (1888), originally a pair, prominently located beside the B6318 just outside the village and facing a large mature terraced garden dropping down towards a brook. I was welcomed by Denise and shown to a twin bedded room of generous size up two flights of stairs in the converted roof space, adequately lit by a small window facing the road and three roof lights (low enough for views out) and with a natural timber floor. It was simply and effectively furnished, including comfortable wicker arm chairs. The en-suite had a splendid shower. On the wall by the door was an excellent informative sheet, which advised guests, among other things, not to leave bathroom lights on due to the noise from extractor fans being audible to those in other rooms. Denise took immediate and appropriate action on my behalf when neighbouring guests overlooked this advice (but why do people not apply common sense anyway?!). Evening meals are very usefully provided at Brookside Villa, with a good selection on the menu. Bottled beer (a good selection) , wine and soft drinks are available in the adjoining comfortable lounge and this encourages chat among the guests, which in my case continued during the subsequent meal. Breakfast included a good choice of cereals/fruits/seeds and delicious fresh cranberries. Denise does an excellent range of reasonably-priced packed lunches, including generously-filled rolls. I paid a bit above what I might expect for such accommodation. However, it was less than in other B & Bs along the Wall, the offer was greater (unspoilt setting, more characterful building, lounge, bar, evening meals, packed lunches) - and Denise is an excellent host.

A Welcoming Stay

A great place to stay just off the Hadrians Wall walk and one of the warmest welcomes your likely to receive. It felt like a home away from home with a definite country atmosphere. Denise was having a night off cooking but organised food on our behalf. She has a very handy bar which saved us a 10 min trek to the pub and a wonderful breakfast to get the day started. Unfortunately I arrived with a back strain after a 30km walk and Denise helped me out with some pain relievers which was just what I needed. If she hadn't already done enough, Denise offered us a lift in the morning to shorten the day. What a star!
