Cycling in Northumberland

One of the best ways to appreciate the fabulous landscapes of Northumberland is on two wheels – the kind you pedal yourself! Cycling along country lanes, taking in woodlands, heather-clad moors and fields of sheep and cattle, you’re reminded everywhere of the rich heritage Northumberland has to offer.

And with a wealth of places to visit, not to mention picturesque villages and great pubs and cafés, there’s always an excuse to get off the bike and take a break from the saddle. Be sure to visit our two new Northumberland cycle hubs in Haltwhistle and Wooler, each with 7 routes for you to explore.

Why not combine our long distance cycle routes with a few days’ exploring the fantastic countryside and attractions around a base. Kielder Water & Forest Park has an extensive network of off-road tracks, perfect for family cycling holidays, as well as the Lakeside Way – a 26 mile trail that encircles the shoreline of Kielder Water.

The cycle hub towns of Haltwhistle and Wooler both offer an ideal town base – with some wonderful circular routes to try out. There are many local cycle-related businesses, including cycle-friendly accommodation, bike shops, cycle hire and transport companies, who will help make your holiday truly memorable and enjoyable.

Miles of stunning scenery, deserted roads and friendly pubs and cafes to enjoy en route - a great cycling county.

You could also try Hadrian's Cycleway which stretches the length of our World Heritage Site taking in Roman forts and temples, market towns and quaint villages.

There's also the Reivers Cycle Route starting in Cumbria and running through what was once Northumberland's bandit country before finishing at Tynemouth.

And of course, there's the Coast and Castles cycle route which showcases some of our best coastal attractions including the Holy Island of Lindisfarne and Bamburgh Castle as it weaves its way between Newcastle and Edinburgh. Northumberland is the place to be when cycling.
