2013 will be an exciting year for Northumberland. In the summer we welcome a visit to our region by the spectacular Lindisfarne Gospels, the beautifully illustrated medieval manuscript produced in around 700 AD on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Preceding this we’ll all be enjoying the Festival of the North East, a celebration of the innovation and creativity of our region since the days of St Cuthbert.

Still blowing visitors away

In 1513 at the battle of Flodden the blood of 14,000 men stained our moors and King James IV of Scotland was killed, an event we’ll be commemorating with a series of events throughout this year. We’ll also be remembering the bravery of both Emily Wilding Davison, the suffragette who stepped in front of George V’s horse at Epsom Racecourse 100 years ago, and Grace Darling who rescued survivors from the shipwrecked Forfarshire 175 years ago.

It’s also the 150th birthday of Cragside House, the ‘Palace of the Modern Magician’ and wonder of its age, which was the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity and is crammed full of ingenious gadgets.

So, as you can see, it’s going to be a busy year. Northumberland is closer than you think and the ideal place to unwind. Why not get closer to our spectacular landscapes on a cycling or walking holiday?
