When you’re here, be sure to visit The Ferryman’s Hut in Alnmouth harbour, the smallest museum in Northumberland. This bite-size bit of history was originally used by ferrymen when they would row passengers back and forth across the River Aln. The last ferryman was believed to have stopped working in the 1960s, and the museum is donned with pictures and stories of him and his predecessors.
For the keen golfer Alnmouth Golf Club, the 4th oldest golf club in England, established in 1869 lies in the magnificent Foxton Bay, with views to Coquet Island and widely over the Northumberland coast and looking out to the North Sea.
Alnmouth beach, split into three sections within Alnmouth Bay, makes for a perfect family day out; grab your bucket and spade and have fun on Alnmouth’s sandy beaches. Alnmouth beach is dog friendly, so your four legged friend can come too. Enjoy a picnic with beautiful sea views, then burn off those calories with a short walk and feel the sand between your toes. If you are feeling a little more adventurous you can roam on foot, via the St Oswald’s Way and Northumberland Coast Path, via bike on the Coast and Castles cycle route, or even on horseback to truly appreciate the beauty of the Northumberland coastline.
Enjoy the landscape with views of St Cuthbert’s Cross on the steep Church Hill, or relax with art and a coffee at The Old School Gallery, there is something in Alnmouth for everyone. Wander along Alnmouth high street and you'll find a delightful selection of coffee shops, pubs, restaurants and gift shops.
Alnmouth, situated 4 miles south-east of Alnwick and north of Amble is perfectly located for exploring Northumberland and the surrounding areas. From Alnmouth station you can hop on a train up to Berwick-upon-Tweed in the north of Northumberland or head south for a day in Newcastle. When travelling by train a well known sight is the Alnmouth coloured houses overlooking the River Aln. Alnmouth railway station is just over a mile outside of Alnmouth and you can get into the village on foot, by bus or via a taxi. Arriva bus services operate a regular bus service along the Northumberland coast so you can enjoy a car free day. If you are travelling by car there is a large public car park on the seafront.
